| Torres continues Liverpool renaissance Wednesday 28 November 2007 Match report by John Mathews from Anfield Liverpool FC grabbed three goals in the last 12 minutes to see off a stubborn FC Porto side and keep their UEFA Champions League hopes very much alive at Anfield. Last-day drama Desperately needing a win to keep their bid to reach the knockout stages on track, the five-time champions saw an early Fernando Torres goal cancelled out by Lisandro Ló pez but Porto's defence was unlocked late on by the Spaniard's strike, a Steven Gerrard penalty and a Peter Crouch header. Liverpool can now progress with a victory at Olympique de Marseille on Matchday 6 when Porto, a point ahead of that pair, must avoid defeat against Beş iktaş JK. Bení tez support The Kop boomed out songs in praise of Rafael Bení tez all evening in a vocal show of solidarity with the Liverpool manager, whose previous European result was the competition-record 8-0 win here against Beş iktaş . Support for the players was in no short supply either, and the home fans' encouragement was rewarded with the opening goal on 19 minutes. Gerrard provided the custom-made delivery for Liverpool with an outswinging corner from the right and the unmarked Torres headed down low past Porto goalkeeper Helton to claim his first UEFA Champions League goal. Equaliser Visiting coach Jesualdo Ferreira had promised to send his team out to play attacking, open football, and his charges did not disappoint as the Portuguese Liga leaders immediately drove forward in search of an equaliser. They got it after 33 minutes when Przemysł aw Kaź mierczak muscled Javier Mascherano off the ball and crossed for Ló pez who headed the ball over Pepe Reina's flailing arms. Ló pez chance Ló pez had a glorious opportunity to put the away side in front soon after when he beat the offside trap only to clip the ball just wide of the post, while Marek Č ech went close with a deflected shot that grazed the roof of the net. The visitors were holding sway but, forever Liverpool's talisman, Gerrard broke the shackles with a blistering free-kick from distance that flashed a metre wide and the teams went in level at the break, despite their attacking intentions. High intensity There was no let-up in the intensity after the restart, albeit without some of the cutting edge of the half that preceded it, as genuine chances proved hard to come by. A towering clearance by Reina set up one of the better openings for the home outfit as he released Torres down the left. The striker teed up Yossi Benayoun to shoot from inside the box, but the Israeli international was off balance and he sliced the ball harmlessly wide. Helton had to be fully alert to deal with a difficult low cross by Mascherano, yet Porto held on until a devastating last 12 minutes. Porto collapse It was Torres who finally made the breakthrough, shrugging off Bosingwa as he burst into the area and rifling in. When Milan Stepanov gave away an 84th-minute penalty for handball, the game was up for Porto – Gerrard making no mistake from the spot, calmly sending Helton the wrong way. Gerrard's corner three minutes later allowed Crouch to nod in Liverpool's fourth as Porto were left crestfallen. |
| 'I don't have any personal problems with Hicks and Gillett' Andy Hunter at Anfield Thursday November 29, 2007 The Guardian Belated recoveries were not limited to Liverpool's Champions League campaign last night as Rafael Bení tez took his first genuine steps towards repairing relations with the club's owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett. A fractious week inside Anfield ended with Bení tez savouring the most emotional night of his Liverpool reign as supporters marched in support of the manager before kick-off and his players produced an ultimately impressive victory over Porto. From a renewed position of strength it would not have been difficult for the Spaniard to reinforce his opposition to the transfer restrictions which had cast serious doubt on his future at the club. Instead, he made his clearest peace offering to the Americans, reluctantly accepting their revised work structure and insisting their relationship has not been irrevocably destroyed by his previous outbursts. Article continues "I want to make it clear that I don't have any personal problems with the owners," said Bení tez. "We were talking about some issues but it was nothing personal. I was not angry with them, just surprised. I was surprised with the situation in the end because I was trying to improve my club. "OK, now I know I may have to wait but it was a strange situation. I was just trying to do my best for my club but I don't have any personal problems with Tom Hicks or George Gillett." The Liverpool manager had suggested a thawing in the damaging dispute on the eve of the game but that merely extended to not aggravating his American employers any further. He had previously infuriated the pair, and courted the sack, with two petulant public displays after their instructions to freeze his January transfer plans - an order that Bení tez took as a lack of faith in his ability to bring the Premier League title to Anfield. But last night he continued: "We need to talk in the future and we will see what happens then about transfers. This has never been about my ego, but it is my responsibility. I need to take care of my team, my squad and my club. "It would be a lot easier for me to stay and do nothing, just pick up my wages at the end of each month but I want to be involved. We all want what is best for the club and I think the owners understand that." Bení tez's conciliatory tone was in marked contrast to his stinging criticism of the Americans following Liverpool's win at Newcastle last Saturday, and his insistence that he wants to remain involved in transfer policy, a requirement now handed over to the chief executive, Rick Parry, may yet prove a problem when the manager meets his employers on December 16. Foster Gillett, George's son and appointed representative on the Liverpool board, was at Anfield last night to witness a fervent show of support for Bení tez and his report home will certainly ease tensions with the co-chairmen. "This is not about me being in a stronger position at the club," added Bení tez. "I think I am in the same position as before and we need to talk about the future and our ideas." The possibility of qualifying for the knockout phase of the Champions League with victory over Marseille in France on December 11 will aid Bení tez's reconciliation process as much as his post-match words. And the Liverpool manager was also keen to show his appreciation for those supporters who marched in his support before kick-off. Bení tez said: "I think this was the most emotional night I have had here because it is important to get through in the Champions League and because of what has happened in the last few days. "It was not the most difficult time I have ever experienced, but it was strange. I was just trying to do my job properly and, at the end of the game, I enjoyed it a little bit. I want to say thank you to the supporters." |
| Bení tez's cause and title talk gain ground at Anfield Andy Hunter at Anfield Monday December 3, 2007 The Guardian Rafael Bení tez did not utter the words Tom, George or misunderstanding once yesterday and yet talk of a possible title challenge allowed the Liverpool manager a timely retort to those who doubt his ability to end Anfield's exhaustive wait for the Premier League championship. Up to third in the table, with Fernando Torres showing Anfield forebears Nicolas Anelka and El-Hadji Diouf that he has the pedigree to flourish where they stumbled, Liverpool made light of Bolton's recent resilience under Gary Megson to concentrate Bení tez's thoughts on less incendiary matters than his transfer-window dispute with the club's American owners. Liverpool, their manager insisted, remain equipped to mount a credible title challenge for the first time in his reign. With 21 goals scored in five successive victories, few inside Anfield are inclined to dispute the Spaniard's view. "In the last three years we have been too far away from the leaders, but this season we are closer and we have a better squad," said the Liverpool manager. A banner at the front of the Kop that proclaimed "As Always We are Focussing On Supporting Our Manager" was a reminder that Bení tez's damaging row with Tom Hicks and George Gillett is not over, merely on the back burner until they meet at Anfield on December 16, but wins such as this can only strengthen the manager's cause. Only in two of Liverpool's 18 title-winning campaigns have they collected more points at this stage of the season, and that is allowing three points for a win in each championship season. Bení tez, whose side remain unbeaten in the league this season, added: "We have a lot of games to play in December and January, so you never know at this stage where we will be. We could have some problems - today Jack Hobbs needed to play - so we need to keep the squad focused." Hobbs, the 19-year-old central defender signed from Lincoln City in 2005, was required to rise from the bench after Jamie Carragher sustained a second rib injury of the season in a collision with his own goalkeeper Jose Reina. "It is not serious," said Bení tez. "Normally he should be fit for next weekend's game but we will have to wait." The collision presented Anelka with a glorious chance to equalise Sami Hyypia's opener but, before an open goal, the France international missed horribly. "It was a great chance for Nicolas," said Megson, presiding over his first defeat with Bolton. "He very rarely misses but unfortunately he did today, but what was most disappointing was the first goal. The first goal changed the shape of the game and how we set out to play, and it was not the kind of goal I expect us to concede." |
