| Berba backed to shine Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed criticism of Dimitar Berbatov and is confident United fans will soon see the best of their new striker. The Bulgarian has yet to score for the Reds since his deadline-day move from Tottenham but has been increasingly influential, most recently on his home debut against Bolton on Saturday. Ferguson said: "Dimitar only played one pre-season game for Tottenham, followed by two tremendously difficult away games for us, and in those sorts of matches you are asking a lot for someone who’s just arrived at the club to perform. "When we understand how good he is in terms of his movement and ability to lead the line, then we’ll get the best use out of him. "You saw that in the second half against Bolton, when we used him more and some of his passes, control and balance were absolutely fantastic." Berbatov is set to take his place in the starting line-up for tonight's Champions League game in Aalborg, although which forward line Ferguson will select is anyone's guess. The Reds boss insists his side are under no pressure to play with style because United are the reigning "We’ll play how we normally play, which is hopefully in an entertaining and exciting way," he said. "We can’t play like that every game but we try to, and that’s the most important thing. "We expect a hard game against Aalborg because, irrespective of their league form, playing United is a great motivation for them. But I hope we don’t have any hiccups." |
| Berba: I'm Not Scared Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has insisted he is comfortable with his new surrounds despite the enormous weight of expectation he is having to bear... Berbatov moved to Old Trafford at the end of the summer after drawn-out negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur eventually resulted in a deadline-day deal worth just under £ 31million. The Bulgarian striker is yet to score in four outings for the Red Devils, and some signs of unrest are already beginning to spring up among the fans. But the 27-year-old appears to be finding his feet after a very encouraging display against Bolton Wanderers at the weekend, during which he delighted the United faithful with a few moments of magic. The heat is still on Berbatov to justify his price tag, but he is supremely confident of living up to the hype. “I have had to handle expectation and pressure throughout my life,” the former Bayer Leverkusen hitman told The Sun. “I’m not scared and that’s why I’m here. The most important things are to enjoy myself, help the team to win more trophies and entertain the fans. “If I do that, if I play like I did at Tottenham, I don’t think it will be a problem.” Berbatov is set to make his first Champions League start for United when they face Danish champions Aalborg tonight. It is well known that the Blagoevgrad native's main motive for leaving White Hart Lane was to return to Europe's elite competition, and he is eager to make the most of his opportunity. | Is Berba really to blame for our poor start?? ============================ Former Spurs player, manager and Co owner Terry Venables has blamed Dimitar Berbatov for the clubs terrible start to the season, but Can we really hold the Bulgarian responsible? Venables speaking to the Sun said: 'Berbatov kept telling us he had 'a dream', Well, good for you Dimi. You had a dream with a few extra noughts added to your bank balance. But did Spurs have a dream too? You got your way but your poisonous presence at the start of the season - the brooding and the reluctance to play - has cost the club that believed in you.' I'm sorry but though Berbatov was clearly an unsettling influence towards the end of his time at the club, surely his leaving would have lightened the mood of the dressing room and acted as a boost to those who wanted him out. I can totally understand the feeling that Berbatov's delay in leaving cost us the opportunity to bring in replacements, but this was not the fault of Berba, who was clearly desperate to leave and would have moved on the 1st of July had he been allowed... When you consider that Berbatov was a quiet unassuming character, who pretty much kept himself to himself, I really don't see that his remaining at the club affected the morale of the dressing room that much. The players knew he wanted out and would have been more likely to have ostracised the player if he tried to cause unrest. I may well be completely wrong, but Tel's comments appear to be supporting a fellow manager at his time of trouble, perhaps he is saying nice things in the hope of gaining favour with the club in the hope of succeeding Ramos if the rut continues, or am I just being cynical?? |
