| Gambling is hard on your health and your pocket, says study Sarah Boseley, health editor Friday November 5, 2004 The Guardian Gambling is not only hard on your pocket but bad for your health, according to the British Medical Journal today. Although gambling is not traditionally considered a public health issue, just under 1% of the British population have a serious problem, and the rate may be twice that in adolescents who feed slot machines, says an article in the journal. Those hooked can be affected by depression, insomnia, intestinal disorders, migraine and other stress related problems. Some become suicidal. Mark Griffiths, a professor of gambling studies in the psychology division of Nottingham Trent University, says doctors and other health professionals need to urgently develop effective strategies to help gambling addicts, now that Britain is to have Las Vegas-style super-casinos. He says the social and health costs of gambling are high. There may also be medical consequences for the partners of gamblers. A study of women admitted to accident and emergency at the University hospital in Nebraska in the US found that a woman whose partner was a problem gambler was over 10 times more likely to be assaulted by him than a woman whose partner did not gamble. Last year, when casinos were opened in South Dakota, it was reported that child abuse rose by 42% and domestic assaults by 80%. Some heavy gamblers have withdrawal problems, he writes. One study found 65% of pathological gamblers got at least one physical problem when they stopped, including insomnia, headaches, loss of appetite, physical weakness, heart racing, muscle aches and breathing difficulties.
