Day 1: November 11: Estonia - Bulgaria 11-1 From Briancon by Kimmo Leinonen Deniss Konosev and Kaupo Kaljuste had two goals each in Estonia’s emphatic victory over Bulgaria 11-1 on opening day of Group D. The brave Bulgarians were trailing 5-0 after two periods, but Estonia exploded for six goals in the last to run up the score. “It’s difficult for the players to keep focus when you play an opponent who is not on the same level”, said the Estonian coach Juri Tsepilov. “In the end every player just tried to get on the score sheet.” And most of them succeeded. Estonia had 15 players who finished the game with at least one scoring point. The second block, featuring Konosev, Kaljuste, Kristjan Valk, Rainer Palu and Pelle Sildre had eleven points between them. Estonia, which must rank among the most improved hockey programs in Europe in the last four-five years, executed very well and will definitely be a threat to France’s ambition to qualify for round two in February. The teams meet on Sunday, the last day of the tournament. Bulgaria could just occasionally get into the offensive zone and they managed to get on board (Vasko Polizoev) when the score was 8-0 for Estonia. France - Romania 8-0 Host France had no problems in its first game at the Men's Pre-Olympic Qualification tournament, earning an 8-0 win over Romania. France entered the tournament ranked 18th in the IIHF World Ranking, while Romania held the 26th spot. France had a balanced attack until its offense exploded in the last five minutes of the game with four goals. Overall, seven different players scored in the win, including Franzios Rozenthal, who, while on a line with his brother, was the lone French player to find the back of the net twice. Both goaltenders, Viroel Radu from Romania, and Montreal Canadien Cristobel Huet, turned in strong performances. Laurent Meunier opened the scoring at the 6:40 mark of the first period and teammate Laurent Gras gave France a 2-0 edge with just over a minute to go in the period. France dominated the second period, netting two additional goals to climb ahead, 4-0. Overall, the French out-shot Romania 39-13. Things settled down in the third period as both teams played conservatively until France's offense erupted at the end of the game. Guillaume Besse and Guillaume Karrer, David Dostal and Rozenthal all scored in the waning moments of the game to claim the win. Romania, from a World Ranking standpoint was one of the tougher teams that France had to get past to move onto the Men's Final Qualification Tournament in February and skated well throughout the game. But France still has 24th-ranked Estonia to contend with, in a game that could ultimately determine the winner of the tournament. Also on the French radar is Bulgaria (32nd). Day 2: November 13 Estonia - Romania 3-4 The first surprise of the Olympic qualifications as 26th ranked Romania defeated Estonia, ranked two spots ahead of the Romanians. After an easy victory against Bulgaria on the opening day, the Estonians displayed a poor team game as they constantly relied on individual efforts. After Estonia had taken a relatively effortless 2-0 lead through Rainer Paul and Maksim Ivanov (both power-play goals) in the first period, Romania stormed back to score four unanswered goals in the second - probably the best period by a Romanian national team in some years. Ioan Timaru started the comeback with a five-on-three goal four minutes into the second period and Levente Elekes tied it up at two with another power-play goal five minutes later. The Estonians were really shaken at this point and things started to look real gloomy for them when Razvan Lupescu gave Romania the lead only two minutes following the equalizer. The Romanians completed a nearly perfect period when Viorel Nocolescu scored the fourth goal - a short-handed marker - with only 32 seconds left before the second intermission. Things went even worse when Estonia's Rainer Palu got ejected from the game after a nasty cross-check to head of Romania's Istvan Nagy. Mikhail Kozlov got one goal back for Estonia with 18 minutes left in the game, but goalkeeper Viorel Radu shut the door for the rest of the evening. Ioan Timaru was the best player for Romania with two points (1+1). France - Bulgaria 15-0 France only needs a tie against Estonia to earn a berth to the next round of the Olympic qualifications following a 15-0 trouncing of Bulgaria. Estonia surprisingly lost to Romania 4-3 earlier on the day and has to beat France by five goals to advance on better goal differential. The French were painfully superior against a Bulgarian side which had already lost 11-1 to Estonia. The home favourites outshot Bulgaria 82-2! Goalie Konstantin Mihaylov was under constant pressure, probably enduring the most difficult night of his hockey career. Francois Rozenthal had three goals and one assist while Jonathan Zwikel earned one goal and four assists. Day 3: November 14 Bulgaria - Romania 1-6 Attila Borsos had two goals and one assist as Romania defeated Bulgaria 6-1 for their second win in Briancon. Bulgaria finished winless. Romania had a 6-0 lead in the last period when Martin Milanov scored Bulgaria's second goal of the tournament. Romania outshot Bulgaria 35-21. France - Estonia 7-0 France waltzed through the tournament undefeated, outshooting the opposition 30-0 in the process. Estonia had to win this game by five goals to qualify from this group, but they found themselves down 3-0 after 13 minutes and that was it. Vincent Bachet had two goals for the winners while goaltender Cristobal Huet earned his second shut-out. All three top players of the tournament, as selected by the directorate, were French. Huet was named top goalie, Simon Bachelet earned the defensive honours, while Francois Rozenthal, with seven points in three games, was named top forward. He also led all tournament scorers
