BOY BLUE CARRA INSISTS HIS KIDS ARE RED Mark Platt 10 December 2004 Jamie Carragher goes into Saturday's 200th Merseyside derby intent on wiping the smile off the face of his Evertonian friends and making sure his young son can go to nursery next week with his head held high. Once a boyhood blue, but now a diehard Red, Carragher is determined redress the balance of local pride when Liverpool visit Goodison this weekend. The Bootle-born defender feels the pressure of derby week more than most and he's on a mission to ensure that local bragging rights return to Anfield. For the first time in years, 7th placed Liverpool will be underdogs when they make the short trip across Stanley Park to face 3rd place Everton. Nine points currently separate the two fierce city rivals. You have to go back to April 1987 since that last happened and as the build-up to Saturday's eagerly anticipated showdown intensifies Carragher admits he's been made well aware of this fact. In an exclusive interview with Liverpoolfc.tv he says: "All I've been getting lately is text messages off my Evertonian mates every time they win, so it's about time we put a stop to that! "The fact that they're doing well this season does give this game extra spice. We're desperate to get above them and I'm sure they're desperate to stay above us. We've had some good results against Everton over the past few years and we're determined to keep that going on Saturday. "Speaking personally, I'm just terrified about the stick I'll get if we lose. The banter started weeks ago. Everyone has been talking about this game for ages now andthere's no getting away from it. "It'll be the same afterwards. At least if we lose to Man United, we can escape back down the M62. With Everton, we're obviously living in the same city so it's very difficult to avoid any stick." Carragher admits he thrives on the white-hot atmosphere and frenzied action that a Merseyside derby brings and he's relishing the commencement of another 'Scouse' battle. "This is my favourite game of the season, without a doubt," he adds. "When the fixtures come out the two derby games are always the ones I look out for first. The Everton games mean more to me than any other, and that includes the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. I love playing in the Derby games. If I could, I'd play in them every week! "When we play them at Goodison it always feels as though virtually the whole stadium is against us so when we do manage to come away with the three points, as we have done quite a bit recently, it always feels like we've really achieved something." Despite growing up a Toffee-worshipper, there's no doubt that the Liver Bird is now closer to Carragher's heart. Unlike, it seems, former Red Steve McManaman. There are many similarities between the two homegrown Anfield heroes. Both are passionate Scousers and, like Liverpool's current longest serving player, McManaman, too, watched his childhood football from the Glwadys Street. But according to his recently published book 'El Macca', he can't seem to shake off that blue upbringing, despite having spent the majority of his career in a red shirt. Speaking about the prospect of having children and what team they'd support, McManaman admits he'd bring them up as Evertonian's. Now Carragher is already a proud father of two, one son and one daughter, so it begs the question - where do junior Carra's allegiances lie? "He's a Liverpudlian," is the emphatic and instant response. "He's got all the kits. There's no doubt about it, all my kids will be Liverpudlians. Always!" Okay, we only asked! But thanks for clearing that up. Now go and help put a big smile on his and our faces this weekend! |
BOSS: STEVIE WILL STAY FOR TEN YEARS Paul Eaton 10 December 2004 Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez expects to be able to call on the services of Steven Gerrard for the next ten years. Despite many reports and rumours that Gerrard will quit Anfield in the summer, Rafa is adamant that his inspirational skipper will eventually decide to commit his long term future to the Reds. He said: "Steven is a very good player but he can still get better if he keeps working as he is doing at the moment. I'm confident he'll keep improving and be here for the next ten years. "When you are a manager of a football club you always think you have the best players in the world. Steven is in my team and for me he is the best in the world." |
"Това бе най-великият мач на "Ливърпул" от онзи срещу Сент Етиен през 1977 г."
