| Rafael Benitez saw his Liverpool side end years of misery at the Reebok Stadium to emphasise their Champions League credentials. It was a sweet success for the Spanish coach, but he got a helping hand from Jussi Jaaskelainen. The Bolton goalkeeper sent Liverpool on their way with a bizarre own goal in the 11th minute and they never looked back. Ryan Babel and Fabio Aurelio extended their lead before Tamir Cohen pulled a goal back. Bolton could have been two goals to the good inside the first 10 minutes. El-Hadji Diouf's free-kick beat goalkeeper Jose Reina in the fifth minute only to come back off the post. Four minutes later Ivan Campo swung in a corner from the left and Joey O'Brien peeled away from his marker. O'Brien managed to get in a shot at the back post but Steven Gerrard made the clearance. bizarre fashion Liverpool made the breakthrough in bizarre fashion after 11 minutes when Gerrard's effort appeared to be going wide. However Jaaskelainen made a hash of it and inexplicably turned the ball into his own net. Jaaskelainen redeemed himself in the 18th minute by turning over a rasping drive from Babel after he had latched on to a good ball from Gerrard. Bolton almost drew level in the 27th minute when Kevin Nolan picked out Kevin Davies with a marvellous cross. Davies got enough power on his header from close range but Reina made a superb save low down to his left. Davies turned provider two minutes later. He clipped the ball through to Nolan, who had sprung the offside trap, only for Reina to make the block. Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia was then booked for tripping Diouf in the 35th minute and they almost paid for that indiscretion. Matt Taylor delivered a good free-kick but Gary Cahill, under pressure from Martin Skrtel, headed wide. Liverpool hit back and a minute later Babel weaved his way into the penalty area after a surging run only for Cahill to make a timely clearance. Babel was a threat every time he had the ball and stung Jaaskelainen's hands with a powerful effort a minute before the break. superb strike Liverpool were in the ascendancy and it was little surprise they extended their lead in the 59th minute. Jamie Carragher whipped in a cross from the right and found Dirk Kuyt only for his smart volley to come back off the post. Cahill got the ball away but only as far as Babel, who swept his effort beyond Jaaskelainen. It was now an uphill task for Bolton given that they had scored only two goals in their last four matches in all competitions. Liverpool were not content to sit on their laurels either with Babel, Kuyt and Fernando Torres giving them strong attacking options as the match reached a crucial stage. They made it 3-0 in the 75th minute with a superb strike from Fabio Aurelio when there seemed little on. He took the ball on his chest before smashing a shot beyond Jaaskelainen from the edge of the area. Bolton to their credit, however, refused to lie down and pulled a goal back four minutes later. Cohen, son of former Liverpool favourite Avi, ghosted in to head home a corner from Taylor for the home side's consolation. |
| Torres multiplies his goal tally as commanding Liverpool go fourth Neil Johnston at Anfield Thursday March 6, 2008 The Guardian Liverpool are back up to fourth in the table courtesy of Fernando Torres' third hat-trick for the club but Rafa Bení tez knows his players are unlikely to come up against such inferior opposition again this season as West Ham proved to be at Anfield. After leapfrogging neighbours Everton on goal difference following a one-sided contest, Liverpool are now favourites to secure the fourth and final Champions League berth with 10 Premier League games remaining. With Torres in such commanding form, it is a task they ought to achieve comfortably. Steven Gerrard capped an easy victory with a typical long-range finish in front of the Kop but the night belonged to Liverpool's No9. All three goals showcased Torres's astonishing, lethal touch in front of goal, an inherent awareness of the goalscorer's art, his raw pace and power. Given the stop-start nature of his debut season in English football and the rollercoaster nature of his team's campaign to date, a return of 24 goals by this stage of the season borders on the amazing. Bení tez has come under fire for resting too many players this season but his decision to name Torres in his starting line-up, despite the player suffering a stomach upset on the eve of the match, was a wise move on the part of the Liverpool manager. West Ham, for their part, hardly threatened before Torres opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The Londoners threatened even less after that. "We made no impression on Liverpool at all," said Alan Curbishley as he conducted his second inquest in four days into a 4-0 defeat. "I knew games against Chelsea and Liverpool would be tough but I didn't expect this. It's the first time they have let themselves down this season. The last two performances just haven't been good enough. We've just had a meeting in the dressing room. It wasn't a crisis meeting but we've just played two Champions League clubs and have not made any impression on them." This was a potential minefield for a Liverpool team whose season has been littered with unexpected and frustrating setbacks against sides anchored in mid-table or below. It was also the game in hand Bení tez had harped on so much about for weeks as his side fell away from the top three. A strong start was imperative for Liverpool if they were to take advantage of their game in hand. Their supporters need not have worried. Any side featuring the sublime talents of Torres can never be discounted and he effectively determined the game. Bení tez's side began the game in determined fashion, looking brisk and business-like and attacking in numbers with width and penetration. Yet the only time their dominance was rewarded before half time came when Torres drilled the ball home from 12 yards following Dirk Kuyt's cross. West Ham simply caved in after the interval. Ryan Babel, who was having one of his better games, forced Robert Green into a fine save before the unmarked Torres punished sloppy defending with a simple header from Kuyt, who seems to have set up as many goals as Torres has scored. Curbishley reacted by introducing Jonathan Spector but he was clearly not the substitute West Ham's travelling fans wanted to see at this stage. "Boring, boring West Ham," they sang. Torres was looking more dangerous as the game wore on and he hit the woodwork in the 66th minute before completing his hat-trick after showing terrific composure in front of a delighted Kop. Gerrard completed West Ham's second 4-0 drubbing inside a week with a trademark finish from 25-yards, the England midfielder's 18th goal of the season. This was Liverpool's fifth straight win in all competitions. Newcastle are the next visitors to Anfield. Kevin Keegan could not have chosen a worse time to return to his former club. |
| LIVERPOOL Founded: 1892 | Nickname: The Reds | Ground: Anfield | Capacity: 45, 276 Overview Liverpool have maintained their status as a domestic and European force since the Premier League began in 1992, rarely finishing outside the top positions. The club have won seven major trophies since then, including the Champions League, Uefa Cup, two FA Cups and three League Cups. Indeed, 2001 saw the Reds claim an unprecedented League Cup, FA Cup and Uefa Cup treble. Having won more domestic and European trophies than any other English club, Liverpool's status as giants of the domestic game is undisputed. Under Rafa Benitez, Liverpool have secured Champions League football in each of the last three seasons. The Spaniard guided them to third place last season and an appearance in the Champions League final where they were beaten 2-1 by AC Milan. Liverpool's first-ever competitive match was in the Lancashire League, where a predominantly Scottish team defeated Higher Walton 8-0 on 23rd September 1892. Club Heritage In 1891, John Houlding purchased Anfield after Everton left the ground for Goodison Park following a seven-year tenancy. With an empty stadium and only three players remaining, Houlding formed Liverpool Football Club on 15th March 1892. Everton FC and Athletic Grounds, Ltd, or Everton Athletic was to be the name, but the Football Association refused to recognise the team as Everton. Liverpool won their first title in 1901 after gaining promotion to the First Division in 1894. The appointment of Bill Shankly in 1959 was the beginning of a golden era for Liverpool. He led the club to promotion to the First Division in 1962 and they have stayed there ever since. The title was secured in 1964 and 1966, with a first-ever FA Cup final victory sandwiched in between. A year after winning the Uefa Cup, Shankly retired and was replaced by his assistant Bob Paisley. Within two seasons, the Reds had won the league, and the Uefa Cup for a second time. Paisley's nine-year reign saw Liverpool win 21 trophies, including three European Cups, six league titles, a Uefa Cup, and three League Cups. Joe Fagan took over in 1983 and inspired the club to the European Cup, League title, and League Cup in his first season. Premier League History 1993/94 - Roy Evans replaces Graeme Souness 1994/95 - Win League Cup 1998/99 - Gerard Houllier joins Evans as joint-manager 1998/99 - Houllier takes sole charge in November 1998 2000/01 - Win FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup 2002/03 - Win League Cup 2003/04 - Houllier departs by mutual consent in May 2004 2004/05 - Rafa Benitez takes over 2004/05 - Djibril Cisse joins from Auxerre for a club record £ 14million 2004/05 - Win Champions League 2005/06 - Win FA Cup 2006/07 - American businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks become owners in a deal worth £ 470million. 2007/08 - Fernando Torres becomes Liverpool's record signing at an initial fee of around £ 20.2million from Atletico Madrid. |

| Torres strikes as Liverpool see off Inter Tuesday 11 March 2008 Liverpool FC became the fourth English club to make it through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after Fernando Torres struck in the second half to condemn ten-man FC Internazionale Milano to another failed European campaign. Torres strike The Spanish international's 26th goal of the season, and his fourth in this competition, gave the Reds a three-goal aggregate lead which was to prove insurmountable for the Italian champions, who, as in the first leg at Anfield, were reduced to ten men after Nicolá s Burdisso was dismissed. The Nerazzurri are eliminated at the first knockout round stage for the second successive year, while Liverpool can continue to dream of a third final appearance in four attempts. 'Pride of Milan' It was always going to be a herculean task for Inter, who took to the field to a rapturous welcome from the Curva Nord, displaying a huge banner that read: FC Inter Orgoglio di Milan. And the 'pride of Milan' immediately set about trying to reduce the two-goal aggregate deficit. After four minutes Esteban Cambiasso started and finished a move which required a block from right-back Jamie Carragher, making his 100th European appearance. Then, on eight minutes, Pepe Reina was at full stretch to deny Julio Cruz after the striker had cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful shot. Cruz chance Reinforced by the defensive midfield duo of Javier Mascherano and Lucas Leiva, Liverpool began to look more assured after the first 20 minutes and almost went ahead when Cambiasso slipped in the corner of the area, handing Torres possession. The in-form forward skipped past both the Argentinian and Rivas Lopez yet goalkeeper Jú lio Cé sar narrowed the angle and saved the shot with his legs. At the other end, Inter should have scored when a delightful give-and-go between Zlatan Ibrahimović and Cruz broke the offside trap, but the latter's diagonal drive rolled just wide. Impressive Lucas Ibrahimović cut a menacing figure whenever he came deep to receive possession although the impressive Lucas coped manfully, continually snapping at the Swede's heels to stop the danger at source. Rafael Bení tez's game plan largely entailed long balls over the top to exploit the pace of Ryan Babel and Torres, and the visitors almost fell behind when Maicon found Cruz, whose trademark back-heel brought the best out of Pepe Reina. Burdisso dismissed The turning point came when Burdisso was sent off for his second booking on 50 minutes. Again Roberto Mancini's team were a defender down, though initially at least, the setback seemed only to strengthen their resolve. Crucially, Ibrahimović failed to capitalise on an error in the box from Martin Š krtel, firing wide. The hosts were soon made to pay as Torres brought down a ball from midfield with his back to goal, turned on the edge of the area and swept an unstoppable low strike past Cé sar. Gerrard suspended Inter did create further chances yet their night was typified by Ibrahimović's last contribution – a shot blazed over when he was clear on goal with ten minutes remaining. The only blot on Liverpool's night was a booking for Gerrard which rules the captain out of the quarter-final first leg, with the opponents to be revealed on Friday. |
