The Netherlands
.

Pavilion Area: Around 5, 000 Square Meters /the expo site/

The Netherlands Pavilion, known as "Happy Street," is constructed in a figure eight – a lucky number that suggests fortune in Chinese culture. It is mainly composed of a 400-meter pedestrian street that curves in a figure of eight and 26 small houses along the street. Built completely on stilts, the street looks like a suspended roller coaster.

Pavilion Display
It is an open pavilion with a happy atmosphere. Each of the 26 distinctive small houses forms a mini pavilion that celebrates Dutch innovation in the use of space, energy and water. "Happy Street" will show that the Netherlands is innovative and progressive in the fields of sustainability, environment and urban development.

Highlight 1: Pavilion without a Gate
Visitors walking on the "Happy Street" will be surprised to find that the 400-meter long street actually has no gate or single point of entry. Instead, entrances to the pavilion can be found everywhere, allowing visitors to walk into this "Happy Street" from wherever they like. This multi-door design is quite effective and reflects the "typical Holland-style." During the evenings, colorful and glorious lighting will create a dreamland for visitors.

Highlight 2: View through Windows
Small exhibit rooms line the "Happy Street," featuring three sectors of urban life, the sectors of residence, work and industry. They collectively showcase innovations in energy, water and space. Instead of arranging these houses in a monotonous straight line, the designers have made a smart decision - "hanging" these tiny houses on the street and "inviting visitors to enjoy the exhibition through windows."

Highlight 3: Orange Eco-friendly Sunshades
About 50 sunshades are erected on the street. The orange color of the fabric symbolizes Holland. The hi-tech coating over the fabric is designed to absorb and gather energy.

Highlight 4: CINEAC Club from Amsterdam
Visitors will see a small house named "CINEAC" on the "Happy Street." In Amsterdam, CINEAC, originated from a functional cinema in 1934, is a famous club and a popular concert hall. But the CINEAC in the Netherlands Pavilion will not be a real cinema or club. It will serve as a symbol for the "Happy Street," meaning that the street offers great fun with its clubs, shops and cinemas.

Highlight 5: VIP Crown Hall
A free-standing small house in the shape of an engineering boat sits on one side of the pavilion area. This is the public restaurant in the Netherlands Pavilion. The boat-shaped restaurant is inspired by the landscape of Holland, with a part of the land beneath sea level. Another small house will follow, which is themed water preservation. Visitors can see how the water from the Huangpu River is purified and be able to drink refreshingly clean water.

Rotterdam city government aims at developing a beautiful water city using its advantages of having a harbor. It names the project “Rotterdam Water City Project 2035” and hopes to spend 25 years to thoroughly get rid of the problems brought by climate warming, ocean water rising, storm and flood hazards and trying to skillfully guide the water flow from excessive ocean, river and rain water into the city in order to utilize it. Detailed methods are as following:
1) Redesign and rebuilt three sections in Rotterdam
2) Use two implementation methods: “water squares”, which opens large number of rectangular ditches to store rain water and clear river flows; “green roofs”, which grows green plants on the rooftop to prevent water loss and soil erosion.

The Turkey Pavilion displays the profound history and civilization of its old land, the country's tourism and the urban planning of Istanbul, Ertugrul Gunay, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister, said at the ceremony in the Expo Center yesterday morning.
Anatolia, the cradle of civilization, where the world’s first batches of cities were born, gave birth to one of the most influential city among the Greek and Roman culture. Istanbul, Turkey’s major city today, has a distinguished history and has changed her name several times.

Today, just like many other countries around the world, Turkey is experiencing a massive migration from rural to urban. Turkey’s cities are experiencing rapid expansion and evolution. Turkey pavilion abandons to present the illustrious history of Turkey’s cities; instead, it focuses on Istanbul, a wonderful and unique city. The old city cleverly integrated tradition and future, on which history and environment left there footprints. In the year of 2010, Istanbul will become the culture center of Europe. Turkey pavilion will share its wonderful uniqueness with the world during the Shanghai Expo.
Li Hongfeng, vice minister of Chinese Ministry of Culture, said the Turkey Pavilion draped in red is one of the most beautiful pavilions of the Expo, which is like a box unfolding a dream maze at the bank of the Huangpu River.
The main inspiration for the exterior of the 2, 000-square-meter rented pavilion was derived from one of the first known settlements in the world called "Catalhoyuk" in Turkish, the center of advanced culture in the Neolithic period. The pavilion looks like an amazing red and beige box with an animal sculpture, inviting visitors to explore a maze of dreams.

Highlight 1: Amazing Journey
The first section of the pavilion will take visitors through a journey of time to learn about Turkey's historical firsts. A map indicating the ancient sites of Turkey, the world's first mirror and the world's first man-built dam are featured here. In the middle section, a 360-degree movie will display scenes from the streets of Istanbul to reflect the pride of the city as the European Capital of Culture. Visitors will then encounter the future in the final section, which is represented by a symbolic figure of the phoenix, a mythical bird which dies in flames and is reborn from the ashes, to embody aspirations for the future.

Highlight 2: Performance
A series of cultural activities will be staged, including traditional music and ballet performances as well as a traditional "Catalhoyuk" fashion show. The Turkey Pavilion hosted a party in the pavilion's restaurant to celebrate its millionth visitor on May 31
Turkey's commissioner general Sencar Ozsoy said the pavilion welcomes visitors to taste its food and learn about the country's culture as well. Cuisines represents the country's delicacies such as kebab and baklava were served at the party. The pavilion will provide gifts for every millionth visitor in the future, he revealed.

Izmir - The Grand Channel Project
The Izmir Bay had been polluted throughout the last century due to increases in population density, number of industrial establishments and insufficient infrastructure. All domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes poured to the bay through channels, creeks, and rivers. Especially at the inner bay, pollution levels far exceeded the allowable limits and the ecology was damaged beyond measurable levels. The bay and its shores were deformed, lost its natural structure, fauna, flora and ecosystem.

In order to save the Izmir Bay from this critical pollution and to re-create its natural state, a series of solutions were implemented. One of these solutions consists in a large scale channel project. It is beneficial for the social and economical structure as well as the ecological health of Izmir’s region. The project has won "The Best Environmental Practices Award" given by Turkish Ministry of Environment in 2004. As a result of the project, the city of Izmir became a healthier world centre again: environmentally, naturally, culturally and socially.

Israel Theme: Innovation for Better Life

National Pavilion Day: May 6
Pavilion Area: Around 2, 000 Square Meters
The Israel Pavilion is composed of two streamlined buildings hugging each other. The pavilion looks like two clasped hands, or a "seashell." One side of the "seashell" is made of authentic stone while the other is made from transparent glass. The design symbolizes Israeli innovation and technology as well as represents the dialogue between humanity and nature, the earth and the sky, as well as the past and the future.
The pavilion highlights innovation and ancient Jewish culture. It consists of three areas: the Whispering Garden, the Hall of Light and the Hall of Innovations. The Whispering Garden is an orchard that greets visitors as they enter the building. Inside the natural stone is the Hall of Innovations, symbolizing links with the earth and history, and the recycling of natural resources. Under the transparent glass is the Hall of Light, symbolizing technology, transparency, lightness and the future
.

The pavilion is a double spiral with pedestrian and cycling lanes that takes the visitors from the ground through two ramps, up to a level of 12 meters, and down again. The pavilion paints its steel structure white, to represent the sailing traditions of the country and to help keep the pavilion cool.

Built in 1913 to honor the famous fairytale character created by Hans Christian Anderson, the Little Mermaid has been sitting on the edge of Copenhagen's harbor since 1913. The mermaid statue will make her Chinese debut at a man-made lake resembling the sights of Copenhagen harbor where the statue resides.

Denmark is a nation of bikes, and Copenhagen is famous for its free city bikes.

Highlight 3: Danish Lifestyle

It is the era of raising living standard of urban peple , finding out solutions and challenges, disseminating a new concept and management, which related to public affairs, and creative thinking is the responsibility of the inhabitants.
Institutionally, PGSL is seen to be innovative by basing public administration on the following principles: plurality (recognizing that society consists of multiple differences), dialog (contributing towards society becoming a system of connections that are always open and respectful) and consensus (forming a community of social responsibility for sustainable development).

Venezuela Pavilion

Theme: A Better Life, A Better City
Highlights: Mobius Strip
National Pavilion Day: undefined
Pavilion Area: Around 3, 000 Square Meters

The Venezuela Pavilion is in the geometric shape of a "Mobius strip," or an inverted cylinder. It is structured in the form of an "8" - a symbolic number both in China and Venezuela, with the eight stars of Bolvar recently incorporated into the Venezuelan flag.
The pavilion depicts many traditional aspects of Venezuela's history and culture. The concept adopted is based on the belief that cities cannot aspire to be truly great places to live until they first address the problems and shortcomings that adversely affect the lives of their citizens.
Highlight 1: Indigenous Culture
The pavilion acknowledges the legacy of the country's indigenous people, reproducing the style of a number of ethnic residences, such as the "Shapono Yanomami" ("forest villages" or the "Churuata Yekuana" (the traditional homes of the Yekuana tribe). The Yanomami tribe that has thrived in the rainforests of South America for thousands of years will perform in the pavilion. Nor has it ignored the life experiences of the country's burgeoning numbers of urban dwellers, opting to represent them through the most emblematic public space in any Venezualan city - the Plaza Bolivar.
Highlight 2: Two-way Audiovisual Transmissions
The exhibition area features two-way audiovisual transmissions via satellite between Shanghai and Venezuela. A live program of Venezuelan events will be broadcast. Venezuelans will also be able to see what's happening in the Expo pavilion from large screens installed around their country.
Highlight 3: Performances by Children's Orchestra
The pavilion's theater stages performances by Venezuela's national orchestra and other stars. One of the highlights is a Venezuelan children's orchestra.
