Pavilion Area: Approximately 3, 000 Square Meters
The Poland Pavilion is composed of three concepts: Human, Creativity and the City. As a perfect example of the Polish architecture, it mirrors the combination of modernity and folk art, representing the creativity and imagination of Poland
Натиснете тук
The design of the Poland Pavilion, appearing to be a folded paper box, is inspired by its folk art: paper cut-outs. During daytime, the exhibition hall will be filled with light filtering through paper-cutting patterns; at night, it will shine with different colors and leave a deep impression on its visitors.

Highlight 1: Irregular Exterior Covered with Flowery Cut-outs
The Poland Pavilion has an abstract and irregular exterior covered with flowery cut-outs designed to reflect Polish folk art (paper cut-outs). Sunlight can enter the hall through cracks in the walls. When dusk falls, the pavilion will shine with different colors that will change as the light outside changes and penetrates the paper-cutting designs.

Highlight 2: Flexible Exhibition Area
In addition to the folded "paper cut-out panel", the pavilion will also create geometrical structures inside. The exhibition area is creative and flexible enough to be divided into several sections for small expositions, concerts and shops. Lighting in the main exhibition hall will create rich lighting effects while the inner walls can be used to project a film about the Polish social life. People-friendly designs and facilities are everywhere in the pavilion.

Highlight 3: Eco-friendly design
It will also be a "green" pavilion saving energy to the fullest extent, and protecting the environment by pollution abatement so as to provide visitors with a healthy, comfortable and highly efficient pavillion.

Highlight 4: Piano Concert on Chopin
The year 2010 will be the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederic Chopin, one of the greatest composers and pianists of Poland. A piano concert on Chopin will be held each day in the center square and music hall of the pavilion to commemorate the Polish musician. Visitors will be able to enjoy the concert while tasting traditional Polish cuisine.

UBPA Malmö
In the 90’s, not that long ago, the future for Malmö was bleak. The recession in the 1980s nearly wiped out Malmö's industrial base. The budget deficit was enormous; industrial Malmö lost a great percentage of its job in just a few years. Malmö was in deep trouble.

But it also gave the city a chance to start over, to try new solutions.

"Radical measures were needed and this brought about the first creative vision of sustainability in Sweden. It was essential that while Malmö must expand, it must also apply high environmental standards", comments Mr Ilmar Reepalu, Mayor of Malmö since 1994.

"We had found ourselves in the deepest crisis imaginable; it was a question of which path to take now that the pursuit of industry was no longer working for us. The direction we took instead was to promote Malmö as a centre of knowledge and an eco-town."

A process was initiated, in which the entire town, business community and associations, political parties and so forth, were invited to join the City Council in creating a vision rather than a plan. Two vital steps along the road towards the sustainable city was the creation of Malmö University and The Ö resund Bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark.

But another milestone was the decision to build the sustainable neighbourhood Bo01 in the Western Harbour as a European Housing exhibition in 2001. Today, almost 10 years after the housing exhibition, Bo01/Western Harbour still attracts thousands of experts every year. They come to see a vision made reality, how you can create a sustainable neighbourhood.

For the innovative and sustainable urban solutions in the Western Harbour, Malmö has received a number of awards. Just a few examples: Last year, Malmö won the BEX Award in the Master Plan Class for Bo01 and the Western Harbour In 2009, Malmö was ranked as one of the hottest cities in the world by the American magazine Fast Company. Malmö was considered as one of the 13 most creative cities in the world.

And, in October 2009, Malmö was awarded the very prestigious Scroll of Honor by UN Habitat "for its innovative, holistic approach to becoming a 21st century eco-city"

West Harbour (Bo01)
Malmö is today internationally recognized as a leading example on sustainable urban development, but also as a city which has both the experience and the will to change. And that is also the history of the Western Harbour – how a former heavily industrialized area could be transformed into an eco-friendly, modern and award-winning urban district. Or, to quote one of the architects of the area, "a full-scale laboratory for sustainable urban construction."

What makes the Western Harbour-district so unique is the holistic approach to sustainability. There may be other leading examples in the world on a carbon-neutral energy system; there may be even more innovative transportation solutions. But in Bo01/Western Harbour you’ll see that the whole is greater the sum of its parts: • A city district supplied by 100 per cent locally produced, renewable energy, mainly from sun, wind and water.

• An area that is planned to minimise future transport needs and car dependency. Cycle traffic is the most important element in the area's transport system. • Recycling solutions for waste collection. The aim of a sustainable society is to recycle, re-use and minimise all aspects of circulation. All buildings have access to source-sorting of refuse where food waste is separated.

• An open storm-water system which biologically cleans the water before it reaches the sea.

• Green roofs and a rich and varied greenery in parks, yards, along streets and in squares. The plan is to efficiently use the space available and to promote biodiversity. The natural areas also handle rainwater and meltwater.

• An exciting city plan. Tall houses on the outskirts form a wind shelter around a small scale and green interior. There are many small blocks and they are all very different. Diversity characterises the area. There are also a few examples of energy efficient single-family houses in the area.

Bo01 had another innovative aspect: Malmö dared building a city district that wasn’t just eco-friendly and sustainable, but also attractive and in a prime location by the sea.

Originally, this opened up for criticism about not building for citizens with a normal income but for the rich. There were concerns that Bo01 would be segregated, separated from the rest of the city.

It turned out to be just the opposite. Today – at least during the summer months – Western Harbour attracts people from all over the city and has turned into a true meeting point in Malmö .

The location by the sea is of course one explanation, with beach-life and deepwater swimming. The skateboard area is a huge magnet, but also sunset pick-nicks, restaurants, cultural activities and beautiful parks. Today the citizens of Malmö are proud of Western Harbour and often bring their visitors to the area. One landmark – The Kockum crane from the shipyard era in the Western harbour, the largest in the world when it was built in 1974, was changed for another, the lovely highrising Turning Torso. Sustainability can be attractive. And a major driver of change.

The terminal is the Blue City which will be completed by 2020 and visitors will be able to leave Oman for Shanghai on a magic carpet. The magic journey is Omani's unique interpretation of the city.

Throughout, Oman's emphasis on a disciplined, sustainable development approach echoes the philosophy of Oman's ancient civilisations, which understood how to survive in harmony with nature.

UBPA -
Prague, Modern City Protecting Its Heritage
The main exhibition theme “Prague, Modern City Protecting Its Heritage” presents the capital city of Prague, through its UBPA winning municipal project of a unique system of flood barriers, as an example captivating a number of other world cities facing the risk of flooding in areas with great historic and economic assets. At the same time the fundamental ideology of this exhibition aims to even further increase the awareness of Prague as an attractive and flourishing city in the heart of Europe, where the great symbiosis of different architectural and artistic styles contribute to its inimitable atmosphere, and thus successfully promote the overall presentation of the Czech Republic at EXPO 2010.

Prague retains a large number of Baroque and Gothic styles of ancient architecture. In 1993, the International Council of Monuments and Sites examined Prague and wrote: "It well demonstrates the development from the Middle Ages to the modern time and can serve as a model of urban development for Central and Eastern Europe."

Therefore, sustainable urban planning approach is one of the topics the Czech Republic presents in its pavilion. The pavilion will showcase the original historical part of the Czech Republic, combining its 21st century urban design; it is a great mixture of precious historical heritage and fashionable modern architecture.

The Finland Pavilion "Kirnu" is surrounded by a lake, appearing to float on the water. It has the slogan "Sharing Inspiration," where ideas can meet and mix. The design draws inspiration from Finnish nature. Elements reinterpreted in the pavilion include the shape of small rocks found on coastal islands, the surface of a fish, reflection on water, framed view of the sky and smell of tar on wood.
Finland attempts to capture the ideas of freedom, creativity, innovation, community, health and nature in its exhibition. The Exhibition Story extends through three spaces: the Welcoming introduces essences of Finland as well as the Virtual Guide (aka Spirit of Finland), accompanying the guest along the exhibition. The second area opens up breathtaking magical landscapes, attached to the foundations of Finland: nature, national character, society, economy, education and culture. The third area is named City of Dreams, an interactive and beautiful presentation of elements of Better Life, as well as solutions and perspectives Finland wants to share. The architecture of the exhibition is functional and clean, serves as a background to present art, design and high technology. The flooring of best-quality Finnish wood and beautifully lit snow-cave or cloudlike structures in the air connects the spacial elements, along with one of the largest textile artworks in the world on the inner wall. The Story is free of verbal commentary, with only ambient soundscape created by Sibelius-Academy. The elements of balanced, sustainable and enjoyable urban-oriented life are presented in many aspects.
Highlight 1: Hightech and Interactivity
Virtual guides: on the huge animated screen, there are virtual guides who will help the guests to understand the themes and stories by playfully interacting with screen contents, without speaking. The first public premiere of augmented reality on Nokia's N900 mobile device will be shown in the Finland Pavilion. Interactive electronic artwork: 200 mobile phones will react to passing guest by changing their display colours. The guest may also take his/her snapshot and add it to the artwork; the snapshots are continuously replaced by following guests. KONE Lantern elevator: The KONE Lantern elevator was designed to replicate the effects of a Chinese lantern but with a Finnish twist. The elevator, combining innovative technologies and cutting-edge design, will be a highly visible and integral part of the pavilion both as a functional elevator and an exhibition piece. The elevator will feature the latest in RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology which will enable the pavilion's VIP guest to access the top floor.

UBPA Alexandria
Alexandria is located on the west of Nile delta, facing the Mediterranean, and is the most important port of Egypt, the second largest city and capital of Alexandria province. The case “Alexandria’s development strategy” mainly focuses on how it manages local assets using donation with competence, break through private enterprises’ bottleneck, and ensures the social economic development model implements in poverty stricken areas.
1. Alexandria local economic assessment: only 31% of the effective employed population is employed. The competitive policy implementation report helps 4 more people to enter the labor market every year.
2. Researches on the residential area besides water, and makes city upgrading strategy: in the 30 water-side residential areas in Alexandria, there are 1, 360, 000 residents involved, among which 20 areas are assessed and brought to agenda. The transformation project has been implemented and supported by social development fund.

UBPA - Cairo
The project is an example of a socio-economic development project that is combined with physical upgrading, and that is responsive to community needs. Such a project sets a successful model worthy of replication, not only in Egypt, but throughout the developing world. It is innovative in terms of its perspective of urban development as it focuses on improving the lives of under-privileged local communities, through partnerships between the public and private sector, while preserving and upgrading the living environment. The fact that the project has developed a system for building upon local cultural assets means that such a system is replicable in different contexts. Already, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), building upon the experience of this project in Cairo, has started replicating it in Syria, India, Pakistan, and Tanzania.
In 1984, following a seminar on the urban problems of Cairo and given the scarcity of public green space in Cairo (a resident’s share of greenery comes to be a foot print) the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), decided to give a gift to the city in the form of a park. In selectinga site, the Aga Khan chose the one with the strongest link to the historic city of Cairo – an eighty acre dumpsite at the eastern edge of the historic city, adjacent Al-Darb Al-Ahmar (ADAA) one of Cairo’s highest neighborhoods in population density.
AKTC saw that the value of the historic city lay in the combination of its historic buildings and monuments, and its closely knit community with a strong sense of pride and identity and long history of craft and artisan traditions. With the effective support of the Cairo Governorate and the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, AKTC embarked on a comprehensive revitalization project which can be summarized into three main sectors: first, the transformation of the former dumpsite into a park (al-Azhar Park); second the restoration and subsequent re-use of the area’s historic monuments, and, third, the initiation of a integrated programme of social, and economic development, to improve the living standards of the local community, and by building its capacity, ensure that such efforts would be sustainable.
In order to encourage community ownership of the project, local residence was given nepotism in being employed as staff and the project offices were located inside the neighborhood to enhance integration.
