истината е меко казано друга: FRUSTRATION REIGNS AT FRACTIOUS ANFIELD The Guardian 03 December 2004 A SENSE of weariness pervaded Liverpool’s annual meeting last night as the two main protagonists, David Moores and Steve Morgan, walked away feeling more frustrated than ever. A truce was called after the hostility had threatened to get out of hand, but Morgan, the would-be owner, finished by pleading with the club to accept his overtures, while Moores, the chairman, gave the impression of a man who was almost past caring, citing the “unbearable” pressure of the position as he went away to contemplate his future. Briefly, as dissenting voices rose all around him, Moores seemed on the verge of an impromptu resignation. Quite what Rafael Bení tez, the manager, made of it was not clear — having based much of a ten-minute speech on the sense of unity that distinguished Liverpool from his previous employers at Valencia — but the evening ended with an increased prospect of much-needed funds for him as Rick Parry, the chief executive, confirmed that Morgan’s is one of two investment proposals on the table. Parry would not be drawn on the identity of the new bidder, but sources at Anfield maintain that it is not the self-styled L4 Group — formed by Mike Jefferies and Stuart Ford, two Hollywood-based entertainment executives who have Merseyside roots — which announced last night that it, via its adviser, Seymour Pierce Limited, had approached Liverpool’s financial adviser, Hawkpoint, regarding “a possible investment in or offer for” the club. Parry suggested that the L4 Group — which is rumoured to have the backing of the Kraft family, owners of the New England Patriots American football franchise — was not in the equation, but he admitted he was impressed by what he had heard so far from the club’s latest suitors, whoever they may be. “There is sufficient interest for us to think that this offer, if it turns out to be an offer, might be a better one (than Morgan’s,” Parry said. At this point, Morgan’s face dropped. He has spent much of the past year attempting to build bridges with Moores — and at first it fell to his wife, Didy, to plead for Moores to listen to his revised £ 70 million offer — but his efforts at diplomacy could last no longer. He was particularly outraged when one director, Terry Smith, accused him of trying to mislead his fellow shareholders by failing to tell the truth about his failed bids. At this point, Morgan exploded. “You’re out of order,” he said. “You (the board should come clean.” It was all rather unedifying and Moores, in particular, looked exasperated. “This isn’t going anywhere,” he said. “It’s not doing anything for the club. The past year hasn’t been easy. I’ve nothing against Mr Morgan personally and, as far as I’m concerned, I’m still considering his offer. I have to consider my options. I love the club dearly but I can’t compete with Mr Morgan’s millions. Perhaps at the end of the meeting I’ll give it some more thought and come to a decision one way or the other. I haven’t been sleeping and it’s been unbearable for myself and my family.” Moores and his fellow directors were heavily criticised for reporting a £ 21.9 million loss for the financial year ending July 31, particularly as £ 10.7 million of that figure was made up of “termination payments” to Gé rard Houllier, the former manager, and several of his staff and players, such as Markus Babbel and Emile Heskey. By far the most critical issues, though, are those relating to investment, particularly with Les Wheatley, the finance director, confirming that the cost of the proposed move to a new stadium on nearby Stanley Park had risen to £ 115 million. Parry said he remains opposed to sharing the new 60, 000seater facility with Everton, but he admitted that all options will have to be considered if the public sector withhold funding on any other terms. He also hinted that he may follow Arsenal’s example and sell the naming rights for the new stadium but, in the heat of the battle, the significance of that announcement was lost. |
