OWEN DEAL FAR FROM DONE
Sunday 16th May 2004
Michael Owen has stressed talks with Liverpool over a new contract
are still at an early stage and that he has still
not ruled out a move abroad.
The England international''s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent times, with the player refusing to confirm he will stay on at Anfield unless they begin to challenge for major honours.
The Reds finished off a difficult campaign in fourth position and are now in line to be in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Owen''s current contract at Anfield runs until next summer, although Gerard Houllier would be loathe to let one of his prized assets depart for free.
Discussions between the two parties have begun but the striker is warning that the club''s fans should not be expecting
any quick deal to be done.
"We have had just one meeting about my contract, " he said to the News Of The World.. "Even then we only discussed the future direction of the club.
"The contract in terms of the length and amount of money has not been mentioned yet because they are the least important details for me.
"Playing for a successful team is the only factor for me. I have never been interested in anything else."
Despite talk of a new contract raising hopes on Merseyside that the forward is set to stay put, Owen himself has not ruled out a move away from Liverpool - although he does not believe he could play for another English team.
"If it happens and I do move, it will be a massive challenge, " he stated. "But I cannot see myself turning out for another club in this country.
"Until my contract with Liverpool is sorted out one way or another, nothing is going to happen as far as moving is concerned.
"I have no reason to move,
other than to be successful - tuka no comment

.
If I do go it will be to win things - nothing else."
